The historic battlefield in the Tollensetal near Neubrandenburg is to be further explored and made accessible to tourists. The Mecklenburg Lake District district received one million euros in funding from the state.
The money will be used to finance project positions at the University of Greifswald for three years. The archaologists should process the finds and prepare a study on how these finds can be scientifically published and marketed for tourism. As a result of the study, it will then also be discussed whether a branch of the State Archaeological Museum could be built in the Tollensetal. The museum is to be built in Rostock and will probably not open until the end of the decade at the earliest.
Battle with possibly thousands of fighters
According to archaeologists, the first known armed conflict north of the Alps took place in the area of today’s municipalities of Burow and Werder more than 3,000 years ago. This is indicated by numerous archaeological finds. The first finds in the valley were made 20 years ago. In 2008 archaeologists discovered remains of bones and weapons on the banks of the Tollense, among other things. They testify to a battle in which thousands of fighters were probably involved.
