“Money for Everyone? Unpacking the Idea of Unconditional Basic Income on ORF 2’s Eco Special”

On May 11th at 10:30 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) On Thursday, May 11, 2023, at 10:30 p.m., Dieter Bornemann will present an “Eco Special” designed by Emanuel Liedl on ORF 2 on the topic “Money for everyone: the unconditional basic income as a solution to the crisis?”:

The global economy is beginning to falter, high inflation is reflected in energy prices and in supermarkets, economic researchers no longer rule out a recession and an associated increase in unemployment. In crises, many people ponder whether the current economic order and its remuneration system should be fundamentally revised or even rethought.

One idea has become more popular again in recent years: the unconditional basic income. It finds supporters from economically liberal entrepreneurs to left-wing economists. The promise: money for everyone, unconditionally and over 1,000 euros a month. As a result, poverty should disappear, people would be able to decide more freely what and how much they want to work and thus be able to better develop their potential – also in the interests of the state, the economy and society – at least that is the hope of the supporters.

Inefficient, unfair and certainly not affordable are just three of the arguments that lead opponents into the meeting. But what do people do when they receive unconditional money from the state every month? Are they becoming more productive or do they end up in a social hammock? Could such an unconditional basic income be financed at all? Or does the question of financing not even arise, because in a rich country like Austria nobody should be poor anyway?
