Monet’s ‘Le bassin aux nymphéas’ Sells for $74 Million at Christie’s Auction

The painting ‘Le bassin aux nymphéas’ (The pond with water lilies) by the French impressionist Claude Monet went under the hammer at Christie’s in New York on Thursday for 74 million dollars (69 million euros). In total, the auction house raised $640 million in one evening.

Christie’s, owned by French billionaire François Pinault’s Artémis holding, and rival Sotheby’s owned by French-Israeli billionaire Patrick Drahi, are in the middle of the autumn auction season, which runs from November 7 to 15. Both hope to break records and generate billions of dollars in sales.

Sotheby’s, which sold Pablo Picasso’s ‘Woman with Watch’ on Wednesday for $139 million, has already raised more than 400 million euros this week. Christie’s stands at 748 million, of which 640 million on Thursday alone. That is the highest amount collected in one evening at an auction of works from different collectors since 2017, Christie’s said in a press release.

The highlight of the evening was Monet’s ‘Le bassin aux nymphéas’ (1917-1919), which was estimated at 65 million dollars and eventually went under the hammer for 74 million.

Three works by the post-impressionist Paul Cézanne, including ‘Fruits et pot de gingembre’, which went under the hammer for almost $39, were also sold for the Langmatt Museum in Baden, Switzerland.

And individual records were also broken: ‘Recollections of a Visit to Leningrad’ by the American expressionist artist Richard Diebenkornn was sold for 46 million dollars and ‘Untitled’ by his compatriot Joan Mitchell went under the hammer for 29 million.

Sotheby’s and Christie’s say they are satisfied that the art and luxury market is in excellent health despite a context of international crises. After an exceptional 2022 with a total of more than $16 billion in sales, there are no indications of a slowdown this year.
