Mones Nazarali of the media platform Action Nieuws Suriname was taken into custody on Tuesday after coordination with the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service. This because of insult and false suspicion of two high-ranking police officers.
He has been charged with insulting two police officers, namely the regional commander of Western Police Commissioner Hemantkoemar Sardjoe and Regional Police Commander (GPC) Chief Inspector of Police Daphne Lieveld. In addition to defamation, Mones is also suspected of false suspicion, defamatory charges and disturbance of public order.
Mones recently expressed his opinion on the SRD 120,000 fine that five fishermen had to pay for catching tilapia for their own consumption in Bigi Pan. He thought the fine was too high for the crime. According to him, regional commander Sardjoe is double standards and he deliberately duped the little man. Mones would also have said that Sardjoe and Lieveld do free shopping at various supermarkets in Nickerie.
During the recent paddy farmers protest at Henar Bridge, Mones had also made several comments about irregularities taking place in the district, with police officers, in this case Sardjoe, liaising with the underworld.
The regional commander has deeply resented Mones for this and charged him with dragging his good name and honor through the mire. Mones remains in custody.
