Sometimes she is still asked how she allegedly rode on a white elephant through the Wilmersdorf district around Fasanenplatz and Ludwigkirchstrasse in the mid-1980s Many Caspar. “But that’s not true, it was a camel.” And the animal was normal brown. Nevertheless, it was of course a rather unusual appearance in an “oriental pageant”.
Monella helped organize this and other street festivals in the neighborhood. She also held some of her fashion shows with her own creations outdoors.
Monella is known as a designer, singer, entertainer and author. For her stage name, she just dropped an “a” from her first name, Mona Ella. She was born in North Friesland but grew up in Berlin. Her artistic career had a family background. Grandfather was conductor; her mother did a lot of tailoring and sent her to classical dance training.
The autobiography
In 2018, Monella told about her life in the book “Curtain Up”. It was self-published and is available online for 20 euros plus two euros for shipping costs schwarzblond.com available. It is also part of the range of the bookshop “Bookinista“ at the corner of Fasanenplatz and Meierottostraße in Wilmersdorf.
A summer job later led Monella to what was then the Bolle supermarket chain, where she caught the eye of the marketing department on errands. Then she stood in front of the camera for the first time for a commercial. In the years that followed, she attended fashion school and did advertising for the fashion industry – also in Italy, where she lived for a while. It was there that the famous director Federico Fellini became aware of her and her mentor. Fellini gave Monella small roles in films and apparently had bigger plans for her. But that never happened, apparently because the director was ill.
Not least because of the “patriarchalism” and “macho demeanor” in Italy in the 1970s and 1980s, Monella returned to Berlin. In a house on Ludwigkirchstraße, where she still lives today, she founded a fashion label with an associated shop on the ground floor. In 1983 she also opened the Italian-style “Café Panini”, which she describes as “Berlin’s first stand-up café”.
The artist performs throughout Europe in the music duo “Schwarzblond”.
Monella worked as a stylist for film productions and created costumes for the Traum-Theater Salome. Prominent actresses and singers such as Isabella Rossellini, Katja Ebstein, Katharina Thalbach, Romy Haag and Angelika Milster also wore her fashion. Today, Monella concentrates on hat fashion, which she presents to interested parties in her studio in her apartment.
In addition, the artist designs various costumes for her own performances in the music duo “Schwarzblond“. She has been touring Germany and Europe with Benny Hiller for many years. The venues in Berlin included the Bar Jeder Vernunft in Wilmersdorf and the Tipi at the Chancellery.

Both describe the musical mixture of chansons, ballads, musical songs and rock songs as “glamourtainment”. They sing alternately or together. In addition, Hiller plays the piano and other instruments; the duo is often accompanied by a band. The latest show is called “Kisses from Berlin”. To keep fit, Monella does a lot of yoga, and she also likes to swim in Lake Halensee.
