Monclova requires a psychiatric center

In the Central Region of Coahuila there is no state or federal psychiatric hospital center to care for the population with mental problems, so the Monclova City Council will seek to build one to cover the most basic needs of this type of patient.

Councilor Edith Hernández Sillas, president of the Health Commission in the local Cabildo, presented the proposal to build a care center of this type.

He explained that the project is for assessment and was reflected in the municipal development plan, which included analyzing the possibility of a specialized medical center.

In Monclova and the Central region, as in any part of Mexico and the world, there are people with psychiatric clinical and pathological conditions that require permanent treatment and care.

Hernández Sillas said that many of the homeless who roam the streets of Monclova have some kind of disorder, but it is unknown what it could be, and if they are dangerous.

They are not treated because there is no place in this city where they can be hospitalized or at least checked and assessed to establish what disease they have and what treatment they need.

He clarified that the assessment for the construction of a psychiatric center in Monclova, presented to the Cabildo in the municipal development plan, will verify if there is the possibility of building a hospital where the mentally ill can be admitted or just a clinic where they are valued, cared for, consultations, examinations and external follow-up are carried out.

For decades Monclova has sought the construction of a medical center of this type through state and federal agencies.

In Monclova, there are documented cases of homicides and attempted homicides committed by patients diagnosed with psychopathies and other mental disorders.

When situations arise in which support is required for mental patients involved in crimes, the Municipal Hospital of the DIF Patricia Blizzard de Páez, the General Hospital Amparo Pape de Benavides of the Ministry of Health or the Social Security help, but they end up sending the patient to the Cesame State Mental Health Center in Saltillo for not having the capacity to care for them locally.
