How much shaped, or rather shaped, did monarchs shape the fate of their country? Answers to the controversial question of the extent to which individuals determine the course of history fill libraries. The Scottish author Thomas Carlyle said in the 19th century: “The history of the world is nothing but the biography of great men.” Leo Tolstoy, on the other hand, wrote in “War and Peace”: “A king is a slave to history.” This defines the range of opinions.
