Monarchs Exempt from Passport Requirements: Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and King Charles III

Jakarta

Passport become an important identity that a traveler needs if he wants to visit abroad. But these three people, do not need passports and immigration services.

Three special people in this world don’t need a passport if they want to come to a country. They are Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako from Japan, and King Charles III from England.

This special rule previously also applied to his predecessors or previous monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth II. The ruling monarchs of England have documents issued in their name, ensuring hassle-free international travel.

However, these travel benefits do not apply to their family members. In fact, Empress Camilla, wife of King Charles III, still requires a diplomatic passport for her foreign travels.

s King Charles is pictured in full regalia in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace, London. The King is wearing the Robe of Estate, the Imperial State Crown and is holding the Sovereign’s Orb and Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross. He is seated on one of a pair of 1902 throne chairs that were made for the future King George V and Queen Mary for use at the Coronation of King Edward VII. These throne chairs were also used in the background of the 1937 Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Westminster Hall to receive addresses from the Speakers of both Houses of Parliament last year. Meanwhile, in Japan, a Ministry directive in 1971 stipulated that the emperor and empress do not need passports. The reason was that it was not proper to make a direct descendant of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu through the normal immigration procedures of an ordinary human.

Just like in England, this dispensation is exclusive to the king, it does not apply to the Japanese Imperial family.

Of course having a ‘special lane’ requires detailed travel arrangements and coordination between high level officials from the countries involved.

Sir Clive Alderton, longtime personal secretary to King Charles III, is in charge of the logistics of the British royal trip. In Japan, the Ministry informs the destination country in advance about the arrival of the royal couple.
