Mona Keijzer gives up her seat in the House of Representatives and leaves national politics. Last Saturday, Keijzer (CDA) was fired as State Secretary for Economic Affairs because of her statements about the corona admission ticket.
“I don’t want to be a divisive thing,” Keijzer said in a statement on Twitter. “I’m not the kind of person and the Christian-democratic ideas are too dear to me for that.” Keijzer says he will remain a member of the CDA.
She adds that she has “for quite some time” had doubts about “the logical nature, effectiveness and proportionality” of the corona measures. “Continuing on the current path is not an option.”
She believes that the government should not intervene unnecessarily in people’s lives. According to Keijzer, corona measures were necessary in the first instance, “but with everything we know about the virus and the vaccination rate that we have now achieved, that point has been passed as far as I am concerned”.
Criticism
Keijzer expressed in De Telegraaf last weekend big doubts about the corona pass, on the day it had to be enforced for the first time. Those statements were at odds with cabinet decisions, which is why her position as State Secretary was become untenable.
The cabinet is expected to speak with one voice and to propagate unity of policy. Because she did not want to resign herself, the state secretary was fired with immediate effect.
‘Good consultation’
Also within the CDA – the party of ministers De Jonge of Health and Grapperhaus of Justice and Security – there was great dissatisfaction with Keijzer’s statements. The party says that Keijzer’s decision “has been reached after careful consultation with the House of Representatives”.
Party leader Hoekstra says to respect her decision:
