National football was filled with sadness and mourning this Sunday, as it was learned that the legend of the king of sports in El Salvador, Juan Ramón “Mon” Martínez, the legendary forward who left his mark on the blue and white, and who is also remembered for giving La Selecta the ticket to the 1970 World Cup, passed away at the age of 76.
Juan Ramón Martínez gave El Salvador victory on October 8, 1969, when the country qualified for its first World Cup in Mexico 1970, thanks to the only goal of the blue and white in the 104th minute against Haiti, at the De la Reyna stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, thanks to “Mon” Martínez.
The goal not only became a historic qualification for El Salvador, as it also meant the first qualification of a team from Central America to the most important event in world football.
