Mon Laferte – SIX / 1940 Carmen (Universal)

The singer and songwriter My Laferte It has been in full swing for a year. He has released two albums like two soles, and each of them, although different in form, represent the exceptional quality of the pop that comes to us from Latin America. The Chilean is a prodigy of an artist, with a voice that balances between the childish register and the tear over some lyrics that narrate, openly, about heartbreak, emotional imbalances, losses and revenge … All with a bleeding heart, to the open grave.

The first to be published is SIX (Universal, 2021) which is an approach to the ranchera with a punk spirit, the bolero, and the bossa nova. Among Mary Lafourcade or the impudence of La Paquera de Jerez we could place a woman whose verb seems to become flesh. A sublime work. “Amado Mío” is a bolero padded by sumptuous string arrangements, the ranchera “Se Me Va A Quemar El Corazón” exudes an overwhelming intensity (“My heart burns and you know it / it burns for the two of us,”), the melodic song next to Gloria Trevi it seems blues in “La Mujer”, and in “Que Se Know Nuestro Amor”, accompanied by Alejandro Fernandez, Delivered leads us to a twisted heights of almost unhealthy exhibitionist love. A wonderful work.

After a time settled in Mexico, the Viñamarina decided to move to Los Angeles, among other reasons to undergo hormonal treatment to have a child. They were hard days, full of uncertainty that are recorded in another great album, 1940 Carmen (Universal, 2021), the author’s seventh in which she opts for a more spartan and intimate production, although the metric is, perhaps, more fixed in the standards of the classic North American pop-rock song. Needless to say, there is a lot of quality in these grooves: “Placer Hollywood” is a halftime that narrates those yearnings to be a mother and “Algo Es Mejor” has a very similar rhythm. Julieta Venegas.

There are takes sung in English like “Good Boy” with very border airs, or “Beautiful Sadness” which is a nod to Nancy Sinatra. An album of salvation for our wife after what she experienced in her Los Angeles journey, and if you will allow me, I will tell you that these two albums have saved me part of the musical year.
