A new exhibition at the Wien Museum MUSA, starting May 19, shows Vienna’s everyday life and street life in fascinating images. A photographic journey of discovery.
Vienna (OTS) – The exhibition “Just a moment! Street photography in Vienna” presents a cross-section through the history of Viennese “street photography”. The majority of the photographic works come from the holdings of the Wien Museum, which is presenting the full breadth of its large photo collection with this project for the first time.
“For the first time we are putting the entire stock of the photographic collection in front of the curatorial lens. And the specific theme of this initial overview is the shape of the city itself.” Matti Bunzl, director of the Wien Museum
The focus of the show is the view of the changing city and life on Vienna’s streets from the 1860s to the present day. In addition to iconic images of the city that capture crucial moments of urban life, numerous previously unexhibited and published photographs are presented that bring everyday life in Vienna and the lives of its residents to life in a fascinating way: impressive street scenes, intimate snapshots and fleeting snapshots of urban life.
„We break into the present and uncover, layer by layer, Vienna’s streetscapes of the past.” Anton Holzer, curator
The exhibition shows how much the medium of photography was involved in the development and dissemination of new cityscapes. En passant, the pictures also tell the story of a rapidly changing city. They capture the hustle and bustle on streets, squares and markets, record unexpected encounters and document moments of deceleration and pleasure. Overall, the exhibition draws a new portrait of the Danube metropolis and invites you on an exciting photographic journey of discovery that leads from early city photography to the Instagram aesthetic of the present.
“The exhibition project deals with photographic time slices, with shots that froze life on the streets of Vienna for a moment. With the moment!” Frauke Kreutler, curator
