“Improving the skills of European citizens is unthinkable without the implementation of targeted educational policies. I believe that education is both the cause and the solution to the problem of skills shortages and overcoming high levels of unemployment.’ This was stated by MEP Momchil Nekov from the delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists during the discussion of the “New Skills Program for Europe” at a meeting in the European Parliament.
According to Nekov, the attractiveness of vocational education and training should be increased. Practical training and dual education have the potential to address skills shortages. To make it more attractive, early career guidance is needed, as well as targeted work with parents. In order for young people to move more smoothly into first employment, it is necessary to provide quality internships and apprenticeship opportunities that guarantee access to social protection and fair pay.
“Improving the skills of European citizens will also depend to a large extent on improving the skills of the teachers themselves,” said Momchil Nekov. Therefore, it is necessary to allocate a financial resource for their professional development, as well as to implement measures to increase the attractiveness of the teaching profession. Special attention should be paid to the teaching staff in sparsely populated areas and remote regions.
