/ world today news/ Fresh meat from Eastern Balkan pig and Kurtovski pink tomato will apply for protection of the geographical indication under the quality schemes of the European Union. In addition, they are included in the commercial list of Metro Bulgaria. The products were presented today to the media and the public.
“At this moment, Bulgaria has only two protected products – Gornoryahov sujuk and Bulgarian rose oil. A third one is in the process of obtaining protection – the Strandzha manov honey. I believe that we can restore Bulgaria’s prestige as a country for which quality and good food can once again become a trademark. For this reason, two years ago, I launched a campaign “Let’s protect the Bulgarian taste” to help change this. In cooperation with the Bulgarian branch of the organization Slow Food, several dozen products were identified that have this potential”, announced MEP Momchil Nekov.
European quality schemes are a mechanism that gives protection to producers in certain geographical regions. They get greater visibility and protection against abuse of the good name of the product originating, created or stored in the respective region. The EU’s promotional programs for 2017 have a budget of nearly 12 million euros.
“Today we are laying the foundations for the next natural step in the development of these products, namely, their realization on the market. I am glad that our partner is Metro Bulgaria. I believe they can offer growers the support and presence that will drive increased production. And this, in turn, will increase the value of the labor of producers,” said Nekov.
