Following his submission loss at last weekend’s UFC Fight Night in London, Molly McCann has announced that his next fight will take place in the strawweight division.
“Meatball” has been firmly established as a fan favorite since joining the UFC from Cage Warriors in 2018. She was riding an impressive three-fight win streak that included two devastating spinning elbow knockouts before Erin Blanchfield submitted her at UFC 281 last November.
Most fans expected McCann to get back in the win column when she was awarded a spot in the main event against Julija Stoliarenko in London. However, the 33-year-old ended up suffering back-to-back losses for the second time in her career when she was caught in an armbar in less than two minutes.
Molly McCann announces move to strawweight division
McCann’s defeat sent the London crowd into a stunned silence before Tom Aspinall returned triumphantly to action in the main event of the evening. Now, “Meatball” has indicated on Instagram that she intends to come back better than ever against women closer to her size.
The 33-year-old has competed at flyweight her entire professional career, with her only previous fight at strawweight being her second amateur fight in 2014. McCann won that matchup via first-round knockout, and after one more amateur fight, she made her professional debut at 132 pounds in 2015.
Strawweight is considered by many fans to be the most talented women’s division in the UFC. But after suffering back-to-back submission losses, McCann can expect to find it easier to hold his own against the competition in a smaller weight class.
