Could even “older” embryos be born in the future? “As long as the embryos are properly preserved, it seems to us that they can remain well indefinitely,” says Sommerfelt. “We know from the birth of Molly that they can survive at least 27.5 years, possibly longer.”
Doctor Brian Levine, director at the fertility clinic CCRM in Manhattan, New York, says frozen embryos basically have no known “best before date.” But it is important to note that embryos frozen in the 1980s and 1990s “may lose quality over time because the freezing techniques used at the time may reveal vulnerabilities.”
