A supermarket in Molenbeek will have to pay 5,600 euros in taxes this year per self-scan checkout in its store. The tax is part of a more diverse tax approach.

Because self-scan checkouts push the work of scanning and paying to the customer, that has an impact on the work of the employees in the store. “Moreover, it cannot be denied that these schemes, which are set up exclusively by supermarkets, have consequences for social cohesion in neighborhoods where many elderly people live, because there is no contact between customers and employees,” said Mayor Catherine Moureaux (PS). The self-scan tax was given the green light in the city council this morning.
The high profile tax is certainly not the only one in a new package of ‘diversified’ taxes. Alderman for Finance Georges Van Leeckwyck (MR) says the board has already introduced taxes for professional film recordings and has also reformed the tax on advertising in public spaces. Such diversification is necessary due to the current budgetary context, the ships insist.
