“Moldova’s Natural Gas Imports: Main Suppliers and Prices in 2020”

Moldova last year imported natural gas from twenty-two countries for the amount (import value) of $850.5 million – 936.7 million cubic meters at an average price of $908. That is, at 17.2 lei per cubic meter. The share of imports by Chisinau in relation to imports by EU countries is only 0.24 percent.

Main countries by origin of natural gas imported to Moldova:

Russia – $704.4 million, 82.8 percent of total imports, 771 million cubic meters, at the average import price $913 for 1000 cubic meters.

Greece – $94.9 million, 10.8 percent of all imports, 84.4 million cubic meters, at the average import price 1089 dollars for 1000 cubic meters.

Romania – $27.7 million, 3.3 percent of total imports, 44.9 million cubic meters, on average price of 616 dollars per 1000 cubic meters.

And if some diversification has indeed been achieved by countries of origin of imported gas, then the main supplier is still Russia (Gazprom).

Of the other countries from which Moldova received gas last year, the United States should be singled out. The cost of imports is 281.9 thousand dollars, 33.1 thousand cubic meters at an import price of 7047 dollars per 1000 cubic meters (!!!), or 133.2 lei per cubic meter of some special gas for a small country with a big heart, as US Ambassador to Moldova Kent Logsdon recently called Moldovans.

According to official information on the UN portal, Moldova last year exported natural gas to Ukraine in the amount of $8.6 million, a total of 10.6 million cubic meters, at an average export price of $815.

It is likely that this is not an export, but simply Kyiv was allowed to use the Moldovan gas stored in underground storage facilities in Ukraine.

Briefly about some of the nuances of US natural gas exports to some “special” European countries.

Almost all states of the continent last year imported US natural gas in impressive volumes and at significant prices.

The most expensive American gas was sold to Britain – at $1,241 per 1,000 cubic meters, Italy – $1,210 and Germany – $1,185. The cheapest American gas went to the Swedes and Finns – $660 and $714 per 1,000 cubic meters.

It is quite likely that cheap gas was delivered to the Swedes and Finns as a result of their refusal to remain neutral and loyal to joining NATO.

According to Moldavskie Vedomosti, the EU countries exported gas worth a total of $90.5 billion in the volume of 86.7 billion cubic meters at an average price of $1,044 per 1,000 cubic meters (from $606 to $1,418). They imported 378.8 billion cubic meters for a total of $380 billion at an average price of $1,003 per 1,000 cubic meters (from $703 to $1,366).
