Lovers of Olav Mol’s commentary still have to live in uncertainty. Mol has been a commentator of Formula 1 races for many years, but has not yet been called by the platform that will own the rights in the Netherlands from 2022.
Mol joined Eva Jinek on Tuesday evening to talk in her talk show about, among other things, the title race between Max Verstappen on Lewis Hamilton and automatically his future was also discussed. Jinek asked Mol whether he had already been called by Viaplay, the streaming platform that will own the Formula 1 rights in the Netherlands from 2022. “No, and I didn’t call them either. I understand,” Mol says openly at the table.

The commentator explains why he does understand the situation. “There is a gentleman there who is going to become Head of Sports of Viaplay Netherlands, and he only started yesterday. I don’t think they even have a building and no company yet, so they will first set it up. At a certain moment they will then start filling in the figures. Then you call for a week and then those figures will be there,” expects the experienced journalist.
People want something familiar
Jinek asks about Mol’s expectations. “I assume they have my number. I think they will call me. No, I’m not worried about it. I would be very surprised if they don’t call,” Mol laughs. “I wouldn’t be angry, but I wouldn’t find it useful either. Viaplay will become a kind of Videoland/Netflix platform. People have to choose that. If you suddenly start making a change there that there are, for example, blond women and it is very different going to do, then I don’t think people think it’s familiar. People need something familiar,” he finally explains.
