Mohammad Al Kindi, First Explorer of Yemen’s Hell’s Well

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Mohammad Al Kindi was one of eight Oman Cave Exploration (OCET) researchers and became the first human to descend to the bottom Hell’s Well or the Barhout Well in Yaman.

Al-Kindi with OCET explored more than a hundred caves in Oman before exploring the Well of Hell. They also published a book entitled ‘A Guide to Caves in Oman’ which wrote notes about the caves they had explored.

OCET then collaborated with the Yemen Geological and Mineral Resources Survey to explore the Hell’s Well.

“The Oman Cave exploration team, in collaboration with the Yemen Geological and Mineral Resources Survey, documented the Barhout well recently. The well is millions of years old, and according to local people has never been explored or documented before,” said Al-Kindi.

As reported Muscat Daily, Al-Kindi said hell wells were formed by the dissolution of limestone such as those found in the Dhofar region, Oman, and in the Mahra and Hadramaut regions, Yemen. The rock layers in this cave were eroded by groundwater containing salt and acid to form deep basins and caves after several million years.

In addition, this well has a hole that emits water at a depth of 65 meters from the surface. Al-Kindi explained that this well has several waterfalls with various water discharges.

“The waterfall in the east is the most active, when the flow of water in the south is disturbed. This cave has a variety of organisms that vary from snakes, frogs, to beetles,” said Al-Kindi.

The Well of Hell or the Well of Barhout is located in the desert of Al Mahra province. The well is located about 30 kilometers from the Oman border in the Al Mahra desert.

The cave is known to be 30 meters wide, with a depth of more than 100 meters. The age of the Barhout well is unknown, but Yemeni officials have said it dates back millions of years.

In addition, this cave has stalagmite and stalactite rocks that are more than nine meters long.
