Reuters – Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah, from Liverpool (England), said on Monday (25) that families mourning their loved ones in the Gaza Strip should not be forgotten, as he released a Christmas message in which he touched on the topic of war in the enclave for the second time.

Salah posted a photo of a black and white Christmas tree on his social media pages, saying he was enjoying Christmas with a heavy feeling due to the fighting in the Gaza Strip, which has been under heavy bombardment from Israel since militants of Hamas launched an attack on Israeli soil on October 7th.

Israel says Hamas militants killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages during the attack. Continued Israeli airstrikes against the Gaza Strip have killed more than 20,400 people and injured at least 50,000, according to authorities in the enclave, which is governed by the militant group.

“With the brutal war raging in the Middle East, especially the death and destruction in Gaza, this year we are celebrating Christmas with heavy hearts and we share the pain of those families who are mourning the loss of their loved ones,” Salah said.

CONTINUES AFTER RECOMMENDATIONS

“Please don’t forget them and don’t get used to their suffering. Merry Christmas”, wrote the player to his more than 63 million followers on Instagram and almost 19 million on the X platform.

Salah was criticized in Egypt after remaining silent on the issue for more than a week after the start of the war, with many fans comparing his choice to that of other Arab sports figures, who were more emphatic in their positions.

However, Egyptian Red Crescent officials said in October that Salah made a “significant donation” to help people in the Gaza Strip.

In October, Salah called for an end to what he described as “massacres”, calling for humanitarian aid to be allowed into the enclave.

The 31-year-old is one of the top scorers in the English Championship this season.
