JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – The election of Moeldoko as General Chair of the counter-Democrat Party is considered a regression to democracy in Indonesia.

This is because control over the government has become weak. Because there is less and less opposition.

“Democracy is in backsliding, the actions that occur in the government are the result of democracy. Making control of the government weaker, the opposition weakened,” said Saiful Mujani, a political observer from SMRC, in his statement to KompasTV Journalist Maydop Elfrina, Sunday (7/3/2021 ).

Because the takeover of the Democratic Party from the management of Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono is considered to be used to support the government.

As is known, the only remaining opposition parties are Democrats and PKS, after Gerindra was embraced and entered into the cabinet.

“Now if Moeldoko takes the Democrats, only PKS will shout without being heard by anyone,” said Mujani.

With this situation, Mujani is waiting for President Joko Widodo’s commitment to democracy.
