Camilo Mancera, coordinator of Electoral Justice of the MOE, spoke in W Fin de Semana about the control that is made to the presidential campaigns, regarding the scandalous case of Nicolás Petro, son of the current president Gustavo Petro, who assured before the Prosecutor’s Office that part of the allegedly illegal money he received went into his father’s campaign.

To start, Mancera explained that “we are seeing in this case that there are a series of complexities because there are many legal routes that are opened because there are different responsibilities that come to process (…) what the law precisely 1864 of 2017 does is include crimes of financing and the illicit origin of the financing of a campaign as crimes”.

He also commented that “this law came into force in 2017 and from that moment on, control began to be generated by the Prosecutor’s Office over the campaigns that were carried out since that year.”

On the other hand, it indicated that “we have been presenting multiple reports on the issue of violence against political leaders and in the face of a monitoring that we carry out against armed actions of armed groups, in this sense we have insisted on the concern that exists in Antioquia, Chocó, Guaviare and Norte de Santander, which is one of the most affected.

In this sense, he mentioned that there is an increase in violence and for this reason they call on the National Government to establish a dialogue between political organizations and local and territorial authorities. “So that any type of information that may affect the security of the candidacies can be presented as soon as possible. That the State can be aware and can generate reactions as soon as possible.
