Modigliani Quartet from France to open “Peter Wax’s Music April” – Classics – Music – Culture + – TVNET

Pēteris Vasks’ Sixth String Quartet, which is included in the festival’s opening program, premiered in the autumn of 2020 Artemis Quartet performed. This time it will sound Modigliani Quartet reading. Commissioned to mark the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven, the composition is an autobiographical review of the composer’s experience in life, and its four parts are about saying goodbye, looking back, leaving and meeting – including Beethoven’s own transcendental music.

“Peter Vasque has his own unique voice; his sensitivity and ability to create a new unique world is a real gift for both artists and listeners. The sixth string quartet is special because it quotes the third part of Beethoven’s Opus No. 132. Interchanging with these heavenly quotes, “The inner tension of the music gives the piece incredible depth. It is a work that goes beyond a purely musical reflection – it invites us to reflect on the meaning of our existence and the place we occupy in the great events of the universe,” says Peter Vasks. In addition to Vasco’s Sixth String Quartet in Cēsis, French musicians have chosen to play Franz Schubert’s last, the Fifteenth String Quartet, which reveals the composer’s highest mastery, message and ideas, which continue to inspire to this day. In January of this year, the Modigliani Quartet released their latest music album series, featuring all the string quartets of the great singer and lyricist Schubert.

Modigliani Quartet – Violinists Amori Coeto, Lew Rio, Loran Marfen and cellist François Kifer regularly attend major world music events and perform on the most prestigious stages. Every year, the French ensemble travels to the United States and Asia, and in Europe he has performed in concert halls such as the Wigmore Hall in London, the Paris Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Concert Hall, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and the Elbe Philharmonic in Hamburg.

The quartet commissions new works by such outstanding composers as Mark Anthony Turnnage, Philip Hersant, Peter Vasks, Kaija Sariaho and Eugene Kissin.

The opening of “Pēteris Vasks’ Music April” on April 16 will also be marked by a visual art event – before the concert, the exhibition “Landscape Code” by the painter Vija Zariņa will be opened in the Art Gallery of the Concert Hall. It will feature the latest works by Vija, made at the end of last year and at the beginning of this year, which reveal the landscape magic of forests, meadows and countryside. One of the most important sources of inspiration for the composer Pēteris Vasks is the nature of Latvia, therefore the upcoming exhibition will brighten the emotional mood of the festival.
