Libreville, Friday July 28, 2023 (Gabon Info) – The Constitutional Court rejected the request for annulment of this text introduced by certain opponents.
The Gabonese opposition ultimately failed in its petition to have the electoral law annulled before the Constitutional Court. In its referral to the highest Gabonese court, it contested the modification of this text during the electoral period, arguing that it would encourage fraud and the buying of votes. However, it is nevertheless it, the opposition, which had called for a modification of the said law. Relying on the Constitution, the Constitutional Court quite simply judged the said request “inadmissible” especially since a promulgated law cannot be contested.
A verdict that is making waves within the Gabonese political class. Opposition and majority in power appreciating this decision differently. “We regret that the new law validates modifications which do not guarantee electoral transparency”, regretted Jean Valentin Leyama, secretary general of the REAGIR party. Opposite, we speak of a “misunderstanding » laws by the applicants. Rodrigue Mboumba Bissawu, Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, speaks of a “decisive judgment for the country and its electoral process”.
