New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over riots in Brazil by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Modi extended all his support to the Brazilian government and said that the democratic system should be respected everywhere.
“The news of the unrest in Brazil is extremely disturbing. Democracy should be respected everywhere. All support for the Brazilian government,” Modi tweeted, tagging Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro supporters stormed parliament, the president’s residence and the Supreme Court, creating rioting-like scenes. Two years ago, after the US presidential election, the attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters was similar to what happened in Brazil. Bolsonaro is also a very close leader to Trump.
Lula da Silva, the leftist leader who defeated Bolsonaro in the elections, took office eight days ago. Bolsonaro supporters protested that the election had been rigged and that Lula da Silva’s victory should be reversed. The insurgents are also asking for the intervention of the army. Thousands took to the streets dressed in the colors of the Brazilian flag. The army was deployed to fight the attackers. Bolsonaro supporters are camped out in many places in the capital Brasilia.
Bolsonaro, who fled the country after the election results, is now in Florida. Bolsonaro responded to news of the uprising by saying that everyone has the right to protest peacefully.
