Can 35-year-old submarines do the work of the Bulgarian Navy in the Black Sea, the Ministry of Defense will wonder. The acquisition of submarines is among the priorities for the modernization of our army, since we have had no submarine fleet since 2011.
In 2022, negotiations were held with Italy for the acquisition of two Nazario Sauro III Batch class submarines through the conclusion of an intergovernmental contract, the Ministry of Defense explained to “24 Chasa”. The submarines of this class were built in Italy, the first being in service since 1980. There are only two Batch III submarines in particular, they have the ship numbers S522 and S523 and they were commissioned in Italy in 1988 and 1989. At the beginning of this century, both submarines underwent a major overhaul and their armament was modernized.
For now, Bulgaria does not intend to request the deployment of NATO air defense on the territory of Bulgaria, it is clear from the answers of the Ministry of Defense. Strengthening the air defense on the eastern flank is also among the decisions from Vilnius. At the moment, outside of trainings and exercises, no permanent deployment of additional forces and means for air defense of allied countries on the territory of Bulgaria is foreseen, however, the Ministry of Defense said.
Instead, modernization priorities include projects for the purchase of Air Force anti-aircraft missile systems and for the air defense of a mechanized brigade, the defense ministry said.
