Modernization of the network of universities in Ukraine – the number of universities will be significantly reduced

informs about this Channel 24 with reference to the words of the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Mikhail Vinnitsky in podcast “Dopamine for Education.” According to him, the Ministry of Education and Science intends to leave approximately 100 universities in Ukraine, which are subordinate to the department.

How many higher educational institutions will there be in Ukraine?

Before the modernization of the higher education system, there were about 130 higher education institutions in our country. Now there are 121 higher education institutions operating. What is important is that we are talking about universities subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Science, and not about military academies, universities subordinate to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications.

Demographics show that 15 years ago we had 630 thousand school graduates. This year there will be just over 300 thousand graduates, and we say that we are moving towards 250 thousand actual base of potential students. And the network was built for 600 thousand. Obviously, it needs to be reduced
– said the official.

And he added that the average number of students at European universities is about 10 thousand. In Ukraine – 5.7 thousand.

Nevertheless, according to Deputy Lisovoy, our country will never have 20-30 universities because of a certain important phenomenon – city-forming universities: that is, universities such as in Ostrog, Glukhov, Nizhyn, Bila Tserkva, Drohobych.

These are small universities that will never be big names and will never be ranked in the world, but they are extremely important to these communities. And, as the Ostroh Academy has shown, they can be very high-quality centers, which will give a head start to universities that are located in a large regional center,
– Vinnitsky clarified.

How is the process of consolidating the network of universities going?

The official said that there is an association of Western Military Districts in Lvov, and they are planning to do so in Odessa. A lot of work was done in this direction in the Dnieper and a little in Kyiv.

Kharkov is a painful topic, because it is obviously not the time to modernize the network when students and teachers are constantly under fire,
– he specified.

Vinnitsky noted that the main goal of enlarging the network of the Western Military District is not saving money. It is important in this case to create capable communities that have weight, where students have the opportunity to choose individual educational trajectories, where there is an opportunity to invest in scientific infrastructure.
