The survey of 30,000 volunteers shows that there is hardly any infection with symptoms, it sounds. Only five participants who received the vaccine became ill, compared to 90 infections in subjects who only received a placebo. Moreover, the symptoms were also less severe: no one became seriously ill, compared to 11 seriously ill in the control group.
It is only a test, but Moderna plans to request permission within a few weeks to actually use the vaccine.
Other vaccines
A protection of 94.5 percent is even better than the 90 percent that competitor Pfizer was proud to announce last week. That percentage was already received as very impressive at that time. Pfizer and Moderna have built the covid vaccine around the nucleic acid RNA. As a result, according to Pfizer, the vaccine must be stored at -70 to -80 degrees Celsius during transport. Moderna previously stated that ‘only’ -20 degrees is required, which would make the logistics operation much easier.
The vaccine from the University of Oxford and manufacturer AstraZeneca is also at an advanced stage. That vaccine would cost only 3 euros, ten times less than Pfizer’s. It could also simply be kept in a refrigerator. However, no figures are available on its effectiveness.
