Amsterdam – The European Medicines Agency EMA is examining the approval of the corona vaccine from the manufacturer Moderna for smaller children. The EMA announced on Wednesday in Amsterdam that a corresponding application for an extension of the approval in the EU had been received. The EMA expects a result in two months. So far, no corona vaccine has been approved for children under 12 years of age in the EU. The US company had previously announced the application.

The Moderna vaccine Spikevax has so far been approved in the EU for people aged 12 and over. However, the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) announced on Wednesday that they no longer recommend the Moderna remedy for people under 30 years of age. Current reporting analyzes showed that heart muscle and pericardial inflammation in this age group were observed more frequently after the Moderna vaccination than after the Biontech vaccination.

Effectiveness and tolerability will now be assessed

Moderna has now applied to Ema for an extension for children from six to eleven years of age. The experts will now assess the data on the effectiveness and tolerability of the preparation.

The EMA is already examining an application from the manufacturers Pfizer and Biontech to expand the approval of their vaccine for children under 12 years of age. The authority expects a decision this year. However, it is up to the national authorities to decide whether children can actually be vaccinated.
