If 80s images of rich hair flood your mind when you think of a perm, banish them quickly. After all, permanent does not necessarily mean frizzy curls. They can be much looser, create more volume and the impression of carefree waves. Or it can help you from excessive oiling of your hair. That sounds interesting, doesn’t it?
Permanent in 2023
A modern perm can change the structure of the hair and give it the shape you want. “The old method uses liquid to open the hair cuticles and disrupt them. Strands of hair were curled on curlers to get a new shape,” Jana Morávková from the Robert Starý salon explains the process.
But new technologies can curl the hair without opening it. As a result, it will not disturb it as much as it was with the classic permanent. “Compared to the old ones, the new perms are also enriched with a lot of vitamins, so they are more gentle,” adds hairdresser Libor Smrž.
But that doesn’t mean you can tackle the permanent on your own. Even so, it is a big intervention and for some it is not suitable at all: “An important factor is the quality of the hair and also their color. I almost never perm bleached, lightened and highlighted hair. Because of the perm, they could then remain very disturbed,” warns the hairdresser.
Even permanent is not permanent
Permanent works only where it has been applied, which means that the waxed hair slowly grows back. There are also washed-out variants, where the waves gradually lose their shape, but the imprint of the chemical process still remains in them.
“Even the wash-out permanent stays in the hair, in no case does it wash out completely, as some claim. It just relaxes and the waves are not as strong after three or four months as they were immediately after the procedure. And that’s an advantage,” says the hairdresser. Thanks to this, looser waves can be achieved that look as if they are natural to your hair. In any case, if you stop enjoying them, the only option is to let your hair grow out, because the lengths still remain more or less wavy.
Do you suffer from excessive greasing of your hair? Maybe the solution would be to have a perm done, the hair is drier after it. “We also do a so-called under-blow perm to lift the hair and hold it better. So it is applied only to the roots, not to the lengths,” says Jana Moravcová.
Beach waves and curls
This procedure needs to be thoroughly thought out in advance. The waves can have different shapes, it is always up to the hairdresser. “The bigger the curler and the wider the strand, the looser the wave will be,” explains the hairdresser.
Permanent is also suitable for those who are trying to achieve volume in vain or simply want to have wavy hair. And because it makes styling easier, it is most appreciated by owners of frizzy hair that has a hard time keeping its shape, and even if you blow it out, the hairstyle stops holding in a moment. Ladies with bleached or highlighted hair should avoid permanent if possible. You also have to consider that the hair will require a little more care in the form of hydration and products that are designed for curly hair.

Permanent for men
Nowadays, it is not permanent only for women, which, by the way, it was not even in the 80s, when some rocker loved it. “Recently, the demand for curly hair has been abnormal among men. I can say that in my career I have never done so many men’s perms,” says Libor Smrž about the trend.

As with women and men, a perm can make styling easier, as the hair will gain more density and a rough look. “Today’s young people have not experienced the stigma of grandmothers with hair curlers in the hair dryer in the hairdresser’s chair. Their grandmothers are usually up to 60 years old and they are hot ladies, that’s why the guys are not ashamed to get a perm,” concludes Libor Smrž.
