The December 13, 2022, the first stone of the future Chartres Métropole exhibition center in Chartres (Eure-et-Loir), was officially laid by its president Jean-Pierre Gorges and his deputies Karine Dorange, vice-president in charge of Major Facilities and Franck Masselus , CEO. of the local public company Chartres development.

Working on this major project, Rudy Ricciotti, national grand prix d’architecture, architect of the project and Sébastien Fondeur, regional director of Vinci Construction France. This future exhibition center more than 16,000 m2 in its entirety intends to offer a gain de surface important allowing it to host larger events; a great modularity to better meet the technical needs of different events; a ” exemplary modernity » to improve the quality of reception for professionals and the public. The site is currently entering its final stretch for delivery scheduled for first quarter 2024.

With this modern, comfortable and high technical quality exhibition center, the architect has imagined a structure which fits into the landscape at the entrance to the city of Chartres, “like a geological block behind a landscaped curtain” summarizes Chartres metropolis. A first step of a cost of €30 million excluding tax in the announced metamorphosis of Northeast plateau.

The exhibition center has a floor space of 10,405 m2 including a square, a reception hall, a modular hall of exhibition spaces, a catering room and administrative and technical spaces. Added to this is a landscaped car park with 1,200 spaces and outdoor and logistical spaces.

The Chartres exhibition center is showing the weight of the years but nevertheless it remains very active, hosting numerous events throughout the year.

It shows its limits both because of its aging architecture and because of competition from the facilities in Tours, Orléans, and the three conference and exhibition centers in Paris.

However, each year it hosts a rich program of trade fairs and exhibitions. It enjoys an excellent location, connected to the A11 Paris-Le Mans motorway, the Chartres-Champhol aerodrome and Chartres city center.

Chartres metropolis

A context which motivated Chartres metropolis to equip itself with modern equipment, capable of hosting national or even international level events by best meeting the technical requirements of the events.

Protected by its landscape directive, “the view of Chartres Cathedral as it is offered at the entrance to the eastern city of Chartres cannot be affected by any visual competition whatsoever” communicates Chartres Métropole.
A requirement to which the architect Rudy Ricciotti had to respond by designing the future Chartres Métropole exhibition center “as a building with compact geometry, with the appearance of a monolith, a “geomorphological event” covered with a mineral drape, camouflaged by a landscaped environment”.
An aesthetic which is brought about by the facades made up of “a pleated skin of sprayed concrete”.

The exhibition center includes a modular exhibition hall in three distinct volumes as well as entrance, reception, administration and logistics spaces for the restaurant.

On the west facade, a fault cuts through the draped element, framing the view of the cathedral. This is thesingle opening on the facade.

All of the program’s entities are deployed on a single level, apart from the dining room and its terrace. The latter is in fact positioned in r+1 “to benefit from a privileged visual relationship with the Chartres landscape”.

To the south, visitors will benefit from a parking lot with 1,201 spaces for light vehicles, integrating into a landscaped environment made up of several curtains of trees and bushes.

A certain number of breaths are integrated into the landscape composition and allow visitors to pause for a few moments on the route leading them to the exhibition spaces.

To the north, exhibitors have access to a 400-space car park and logistical access covered with trees and grassy areas.

Energetic performance

As with the other recently built structuring facilities in Chartres, the choice was made to bring the project into the thermal regulations 2012.

Strengthening the insulation of the building envelope and airtightness performance as well as the provision of light in order to minimize energy consumption make it possible to “reinforce the performance of the building and limit consumption heating at 15 kwh/m²/year of heating” ensures Chartres Métropole.
