Moderate earthquake hits the island state of Hawaii

The earth shook in Hawaii on Sunday evening. The strength was given as 6.2. There have been no damages or injuries so far, the local media reported.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook the US island state of Hawaii late on Sunday evening (local time). The center of the quake was south of the coast of the main island Big Island at a depth of 35 kilometers, said the US earthquake monitoring station USGS. The tremors were felt all over the island. In terms of strength, small damage to houses is possible.

However, according to local media reports, no information was initially available about actual damage. Experts said the quake had no impact on the Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes on the Big Island. There was no tsunami warning. As a result, there were several aftershocks.

The island of Hawaii is the youngest island in a chain of volcanoes that stretches some 5,500 kilometers across the northern Pacific. The island chain results from a magma source that rises deep under the crust.
