Model who disappeared a year ago in New York found in a favela in Rio de Janeiro and admitted to a psychiatric hospital

A promising supermodel career, glossy magazine covers and campaigns for brands like Dolce & Gabbana. For Eloísa Pinto Fontes, born 26 years ago in a small town in the hinterland of Alagoas, the doors of the fashion system had opened: from an unknown girl to an international top model. But suddenly Eloisa’s dream broke, for no reason: in June 2019, she was found wandering a street in White Plains, a city about 30 minutes by train from downtown Manhattan, New York. She had been missing for five days at the time. Then, after a new disappearance, no news of her for a whole year, in which searches and appeals from desperate family members multiplied (Eloisa has eight brothers).

The finding

Total silence, until Wednesday 7 October, when she reappeared in a favela located on a hill in Rio de Janeiro. Police explained that the young woman was located by officers in the Morro do Cantagalo favela, in Ipanema, in the southern part of the city. And although no one knows how she got there yet, the press revealed that the woman was found living on the street and was life threatening. Immediately after the discovery, Eloísa was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, the Municipal Philippe Pinel Institute of Rio de Janeiro. The municipal secretary of health reported that information on his situation was limited exclusively to the family.

The husband and the daughter

When model Eloísa Pintos Fontes disappeared near New York in 2019, the Brazilian press reported the case in its major newspapers: she was married at the time and had a daughter of 41-year-old Russian model and executive producer Andre Birleanul. The two met in 2012, in Sao Paulo, and got married in 2014. Andre has an eldest daughter from a previous relationship with another Brazilian model. He was known for his participation in the American VH1 program “America’s Smartest Model”. Now it remains to clarify how Eloisa spent the last year in which she was declared “desaparecida” and how she ended up in the Cantagalo favela.
