Een Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) mod was recently uploaded on nexus mod under the name Undead Nightmare 2. In the update there is a plague of zombies after you, which makes the game a lot more difficult. In every village houses are boarded up to keep the zombies out. Villagers shoot at every zombie they see and help you where necessary. You can take shelter in, for example, the cafe, which can only be reached via a staircase.
The music, sound effects and visuals have also been thoroughly tackled to give a real horror feeling. Of course it hasn’t become a real horror game yet, because the intention behind the mod is not to scare you enormously. The goal is simply to offer a different experience, which can sometimes be secretly very scary.
The music helps with this, and gives a feeling as if you are constantly being hunted. In every village at least something is on fire and the environment looks ominous. Modders often do a lot of things when it comes to RDR2. So is recently added a whole new part to the map.
Mods save the day
This new way of playing is not new. The predecessor, Red Dead Redemption, also had this mode in the form of a DLC. This DLC is called Undead Nightmare, and it did the same thing Undead Nightmare 2 does. Unlike the new mod, this DLC did cost extra money. Why Rockstar Games didn’t develop the popular expansion for the 2018 sequel is still an open question.
