The young cat Mochi had to have a leg and both ears removed due to a rare disease. Now she has found a loving home.

Munchin cat Mochi is just eight months old – but she has had to go through a lot during this time. She was originally born in China to a breeder and was to be adopted by a family in Boston. But as soon as she arrived in the USA, parts of her body seemed to simply atrophy and die. The owners were puzzled.

Rare disease attacks tissues of cat Mochi

To get the help she needed, Mochi’s owners took the cat to an animal shelter, where a team of specialists could take care of her. There, the experts found that she was suffering from a rare disease, ischemic dermatopathy, which was apparently the result of a vaccination. This caused widespread inflammation that attacked the limbs and led to necrosis – i.e. irreversible death of body tissue. Doctors had to amputate one of its hind legs, both ears and its tail to save the animal.

The cat was in the shelter for treatment for two months and was slowly being nursed back to health. But luck was finally on her side: When the animal shelter started looking for new owners, an animal-loving couple noticed her: “My fiancee saw the ad and we fell in love with her immediately and knew that we would give her a wonderful one at home,” says Greg McDouglas, according to the online portal Newsweek. “We applied and since we are a young, adult couple with no children or pets, we were selected!”

“Absolute purr machine”: Mochi gets a new home with loving owners

In January, Mochi finally moved to her new owners in Boston – and the new home is obviously doing her well. She was able to double her weight in a very short time. Her character also comes through better now: “She’s a lovable, clumsy, fearless adventurer and we couldn’t be more in love with her,” says McDouglas. “She’s so affectionate, an absolute purr and walks around on her three legs with no problem! She runs up and down the stairs, sprints around the house, and jumps onto our couch and bed with no problem.” With her energy, no one would know she’s missing a few limbs — and McDouglas himself thinks Mochi hardly notices.

Her new owners wanted to share her joy about the great development of Mochi with the whole world: the young cat lady now has her own profile on Instagram, where cat fans can keep up to date. McDouglas hopes Mochi’s story will inspire other people to “give rescued or disabled animals a chance.”
