Ukrainian intelligence has released an audio recording between a Russian soldier and his girlfriend, explaining what the situation is at the front.
In the conversation, he explains how Russian soldiers are forced to shoot any deserter who tries to flee the battlefield. The man also tells the woman how some of the mobilized people are actually prisoners who are sent to the front line, while he and his platoon are on the second line and must be careful of any escape attempts.
We have been sent back to the second line, now we are in the trenches and we only hear the shots echoing in front of us. If anyone starts running, we’ll shoot them, the soldier tells the girl about him.
There was a similar order in World War II, issued personally by the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. Known as Ordinance 227, issued in 1942, it required Soviet soldiers to kill comrades who left hostilities without permission. The regulation in question became infamous in the Soviet Union with its slogan: “Not a step back!”.
