With adapted driving behavior you not only protect yourself, but also all other road users. Therefore, always adhere to the specified maximum speeds and show consideration for cyclists and pedestrians.

Speeders have to reckon with these fines

In Germany, the Road Traffic Act (StVO) applies. This also regulates the penalties for exceeding the speed limit. In connection with the catalog of fines, the standard rates range from 20 to 800 euros. A distinction is made as to whether the speeding offense is committed outside of town or inside town. The maximum penalty threatens if you were driving more than 70 km/h too fast in the city area and were flashed. Racers then expect a fine of 800 euros, 2 points in Flensburg and even a 3-month driving ban.

What are the tolerances when flashed?

The deducted tolerances for mobile devices are the same as for stationary speed cameras. The following generally applies: At a driving speed of less than 100 km/h, 3 km/h are usually subtracted from the measured value. At speeds over 100 km/h, the deduction is usually 3 percent of the measured value. Some speed camera models have lower measurement accuracies, here the tolerance deduction can also be set higher.

How mobile speed cameras work

Unlike permanently installed flash units, mobile speed cameras are quick and easy to set up and can therefore be lurking on every street corner. In one variant, the device is simply screwed onto a tripod and is then ready for use. It often flashes from cars parked on the side of the road. The technologies used are similar to those of stationary speed cameras. Usually one works with electromagnetic waves or light signals, which are emitted by the speed camera, reflected by the vehicle and thrown back to the measuring device. The speed can then be calculated from the time between sending and receiving the signal.

Speed camera apps and radar detectors are prohibited while driving

According to the Road Traffic Act (StVO), devices with a real-time warning function for speed cameras are prohibited in Germany. It is written there: “Anyone who drives a vehicle may not operate a technical device or carry it ready for operation that is intended to display or disrupt traffic surveillance measures.” External radar detectors are therefore absolutely prohibited. A smartphone itself does not have to be switched off, but at least the warning function must be deactivated in navigation apps. In order to avoid being photographed by a speed camera, the safest method is still to stick to the prescribed speed limits. By the way: speed camera warnings on the radio are of course still allowed. A person driving the vehicle alone is not explicitly warned here.
