Cameroon celebrates on Saturday, May 20, 2023, the 51e edition of its National Unity Day. The event, as usual, has a very marked political coloring, characterized by an official exit of the President of the Republic, Paul Biya, to the festivities planned for the occasion. It is first of all the civil and military parade which he attends on the boulevard of May 20 in the morning, in the company of an audience of collaborators, guests, and especially representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Cameroon.

In the evening, the Head of State revives an old tradition after a few years of interruption, and will offer a dinner to his guests in the grounds of the palace of unity, the highlight of the celebration of this day. Presence at these two highlights, namely access to the presidential gallery on the boulevard du 20 mai, and access to the palace, requires a special invitation from the presidential couple.
For this 51e edition, the guests of Paul and Chantal Biya are informed that the use of mobile phones is not authorized in these two places during the day of May 20. This is the quintessence of a note from the Ministry of External Relations, addressed to the heads of diplomatic missions, heads of consular posts, and international organizations accredited to Cameroon.
« The Minister specifies that mobile phones are not authorized both on the Boulevard du 20 mai and on the grounds of the Palace of Unity and declines all responsibility of the Cameroonian government in the face of the consequences of the actions of offenders of these high instructions. “, informs this document dating from May 17.
It goes without saying that searches will be instituted in these places and conducted by the Cameroonian security forces, in order to reassure themselves that this measure is effective.
One downside, guests will no longer be forced to necessarily observe the barrier measures linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, especially since the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated on May 5 that this pandemic no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.
