Mobile homes in residential areas in Bremen: What is allowed and prohibited. – News from Bremen

Motorhomes with a total weight of up to 7.5 tons are legally allowed to park in residential areas. (Frank Thomas Koch)

The parking pressure in the districts close to the center is increasing. Cars are getting bigger and wider, commuters and tourists are looking for free parking spaces, and wrong-way and third-party parkers do the rest. In winter, there are also mobile homes that block parking spaces and restrict the view with their size. But is it even allowed to park the camping vehicles in residential areas? Is it a problem in Bremen? The traffic and interior departments have so far not registered any abnormalities.

If they are ready for traffic, mobile homes can be parked lawfully for as long as the owner wants, according to the interior authorities. According to the Road Traffic Act (StVO), most of the motorhomes are legally allowed to park on the roadside. The total weight of the vehicles must not exceed 7.5 tons. For such very large, truck-like vehicles, parking in purely residential areas is prohibited between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and on Sundays and public holidays. “Caravans and other trailers can be parked for a maximum of 14 days,” says department spokeswoman Karen Stroink. Exceeding the 14-day period will be punished with ten euros. The fine could be increased the repeated time.

And how is the situation in Bremen? “Regarding incorrectly parked motorhomes or caravans, the public order office received neither information nor was it able to determine any abnormalities of its own,” says Stroink. There are no figures on violations caused by incorrectly parked motorhomes, especially since motorhomes are to be rated like cars. So if the vehicles are registered and not parked in violation of the traffic regulations, the keepers do not commit any offense. Thus, according to the interior authorities, no statement can be made about particularly affected districts.

The spokeswoman for the authorities emphasizes, however, that vehicles of a certain height – whether mobile homes or small vans, for example from a package delivery company – could always impair the view. In this respect, mutual consideration and caution are all the more important. Towing the vehicles is only justified if they pose a hindrance or danger – this includes the blocking of emergency vehicles. “That costs 65 euros and is punished with one point in Flensburg,” said Stroink.

“There are neuralgic points where problems arise from time to time,” says Michael Richartz, spokesman for the Bremen fire brigade. But these are vehicles of all types and rarely camping vehicles. According to the traffic authority in Bremen, there are no special parking spaces for mobile homes. The need has not yet been formulated. According to the Office for Roads and Transport, it is legally difficult to prevent motorhomes from being parked on normal roads.
