HOUSTON (AP) — Michael Mmoh defeated Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the Houston tournament on Wednesday.
Mmoh had been spared the first round after top seed Casper Ruud withdrew due to a wisdom tooth problem. The hosts advanced to their third career quarterfinals on the ATP Tour.
Querry, who twice reached the final in Houston, lost after reaching the tournament quarterfinals in five of the last six editions.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Nick Kyrgios outscored Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-2 to reach his first clay-court quarters since 2018 at this tournament. It is the second time the Australian has reached a quarter-final this season.
