Máxima MC is now offering MRI-guided biopsies to further establish the diagnosis of prostate cancer in patients. Using MRI images, a robot is controlled in such a way that the radiologist biopsies the patient exactly in the area with the suspected cells. According to the MMC a safe, friendly and reliable method to detect prostate cancer.
Standard MRI
If prostate cancer is suspected, a patient will receive an MRI and a prostate biopsy through the rectum as standard. MRI-guided biopsies are now being added to this. Hermen van Beek, radiologist Máxima MC: “During this examination, the patient lies on his stomach in the MRI machine and the robot is placed between the patient’s legs. Using current MRI images, we can control the robot in such a way that we biopsy exactly in the right place. ”
Multiple benefits
The robot-guided MRI guided technique has several advantages. It is sufficient to take only two biopsies instead of the usual twelve prostate biopsies. This reduces the risk of complications such as infections, pain and bleeding. The two biopsies are also biopsied very precisely from the most suspicious area, where a normal prostate biopsy can only reach part of the prostate.
It is now possible to biopsy any specific spot in the entire prostate. “Because of this precision, a small suspicious spot on the MRI was recently biopsied very precisely in a patient during an MRI-guided biopsy. Prostate cancer was diagnosed at an early stage and this patient could be treated immediately, ”says Van Beek.
Application
MRI-guided biopsies are currently used in patients with difficult-to-access tumors or for very small anomalies on the MRI. This method is also used in patients to see whether the aggressiveness of a tumor is higher than has already been found with the usual biopsies. With this new method, MMC follows the recently published European guideline for prostate cancer. Although the availability of the MRI-guided biopsy is currently still limited, it is expected that this method will be offered more in the long term and manual techniques will increasingly replace manual techniques.
