New York City FC and Toronto FC fell short on Saturday as they tied for a 1-1 draw.
The NYCFC opened the scoring in front of their fans in the 53rd minute. Alex Bono failed to master Gudmundur Thorarinsson’s free kick. The generous rebound went to Jesus Medina who did not miss this chance to make the ropes vibrate.
The New York squad thought they had taken advantage of another Bono blunder a few moments later. His clearance hit the back of Medina’s header and then ended up in his goal. However, the official ruled that the NYCFC player deliberately obstructed the goalie and the goal was disallowed.
The replica of the TFC came from the foot of Jacob Shaffelburg. The latter entered the match by replacing Yeferson Soteldo. He accepted the surrender from Patrick Mullins to outsmart the NYCFC goalie.
Shaffelburg scored his first goal in MLS and the mark held until the end.
