Pure excitement before the big final in the basic round of Major League Soccer on Sunday night. Eleven teams tremble after the 33rd of 34 game days of the regular season and their entry into the MLS playoffs. Six tickets – three each in the east and three in the west – are still available before the final round of the regular season.
The New York Red Bulls gave a 0-0 home game against Atlanta United the chance to get a safety cushion. Instead, the team of Salzburg coach Gerhard Struber, who was not allowed to sit on the bench against Atlanta due to a ban (yellow cards), has a “real final” in Nashville (Sunday, 9:30 pm CET). The team around the ex-Salzburg resident Hany Mukhtar has already qualified for the playoffs as third in the east.
Atlanta also missed the opportunity to secure the playoffs with the goalless draw, but finds the supposedly easier task at the end of the regular season with the game at the bottom of the table, Cincinnati.
Atlanta and Orlando hold 48 points after 33 match days, the Red Bulls are one point behind in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. Outside the playoff places in the MLS East before the final round – the “Decision Day” – Montreal (46 points) as well as DC United and Columbus with 44 points each lurk.
Back to the 0-0 win against Atlanta in the Red Bull Arena. The hosts are clearly superior, record 56.6: 43.4 percent possession of the ball and record 15: 2 shots on goal, whereby only 3: 1 shots find their way directly to the opposing goal. The corner ratio of 12: 1 also speaks clearly for the Red Bulls, who miss all chances and in the end have to be happy that Atlanta missed a match point in the finish.
The 31-year-old Styrian Daniel Royer comes on in the 84th minute for the unsuccessful Polish striker Patryk Klimala, who slams the ball on the crossbar in the 48th minute and storms all alone towards the Atlanta goalie, but the ball is not in the goal can accommodate.
Head Coach Gerhard Struber will be suspended for #RBNYvATL due to yellow card accumulation.
