After two seasons in which injuries have diminished the team’s performance, the New York Yankees will kick off another MLB campaign on the wrong foot this season, as manager Aaron Boone revealed that reliever Zack Britton could miss Opening Day 2021 before an MRI revealed that he needed surgery.
The Yankees manager said that the main priority for him and the team is that Britton is treated in the best way to avoid further damage.
“Since we always look to April 1, that’s a day,” Boone said. “Most importantly, we want this to be properly diagnosed, properly treated, and for Britt to be in the best place to be at her best.”
Boone added that the Yankees wouldn’t be considering a Tommy John surgery, indicating that Britton’s ulnar collateral ligament is not the area of concern.
Zack Britton revealed in January to the New York Post that had caught COVID-19 adding that he hit it “pretty good”, as he lost a good amount of weight. His contagion affected his preparation for Spring Training 2021, in which he has seen no action during exhibition games.
The southpaw, who will be launching his 11th season in the MLB, is projected to be an important part of the Yankees bullpen alongside Aroldis Chapman, the only two left-handers in the bullpen prior to the hiring of Justin Wilson, who is back with the team after five seasons.
