Nestor Cortes got the better of Shohei Ohtani as the Los Angeles Angels beat the New York Yankees 6-1 on Thursday in Game 1 of a doubleheader.
Cortes (5-1) blanked the Angels for seven innings to claim the win in a fourth straight start. He allowed five hits and two walks and recorded seven strikeouts.
Ohtani (3-4) meanwhile was battered for four runs on eight hits, including three homers, in just three innings.
Matt Carpenter and Gleyber Torres stretched their arms against Ohtani in the first inning and Aaron Judge added his MLB-high 19th homer of the season in the third inning.
At bat, Ohtani had a single in five appearances for the Angels, who lost a seventh straight game.
The two teams meet again in the evening. Reid Detmers (2-2) will start for the Angels while the Yankees will give the ball to Jameson Taillon (5-1).
