The MLB is full of rumors due to the report of “preliminary conversations” between the New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres to negotiate the trade of Juan Soto.
Although the Major Leagues know that the Bronx management must go for a star this offseason and the Dominican would certainly provide answers to several needs, they are not close to closing a deal.
There are a series of elements that could be an obstacle for New York fans to see the arrival of Soto to the Yankee Stadium outfield.
The San Diego organization will hopefully expect a high-value return to give Soto, and that means top-tier prospects will be involved. The Yankees have refused to deal their top prospects and the owner has said that Jasson Domínguez and others are untouchable.
Entering into negotiations to change Soto implies that the team that acquires him has the ability to offer him a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract. Although his market value is currently around $400 million, it is known that the Dominican and his representative are seeking a deal of $500 million.
Everything indicates that the New York Yankees were the first to take the step, but those from the Bronx are not the only team that is after the acquisition of Soto. They have competition with other organizations with financial solvency and aspirations to transcend, such as the Mets, Giants, Red Sox and now the Cubs.
Top-tier prospects are just one aspect of the demands the Padres can make to complete a deal for Soto. In San Diego they are not rebuilding the team, so they can ask for players with experience in the majors and although Gleyber Torres and even Anthony Rizzo have been mentioned as candidates, it cannot be ruled out that the demands will increase.
The Yankees’ payroll is always one of the highest and they already have long-term commitments with Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole, not counting the acquisitions they make in this winter market. Adding Soto’s multimillion-dollar deal could generate a burden that management wants to avoid.
