Nike’s new baseball jerseys for the 2024 MLB season have faced criticism from players for their “cheap” look. Pitchers Rich Hill and Miles Mikolas expressed their dissatisfaction with the uniforms, despite other players praising their stretchiness and lighter feel. However, recent photos have raised concerns about the jerseys’ pants, which appear to be too light.
During a recent photo shoot day for the San Francisco Giants, Casey Schmitt modeled the new jerseys. However, in one photo, he accidentally revealed more than intended, drawing attention to the thin-looking pants. This photo quickly went viral, adding to the existing concerns about the jerseys.
One noticeable issue with the jerseys is that the last names on the back appear noticeably smaller, leading to complaints from fans. MLB senior vice president of global consumer products, Denis Nolan, defended the uniforms, stating that Fanatics, which acquired Majestic and its MLB uniform manufacturing facilities, has consistently produced high-quality uniforms.
The league tested the uniforms on hundreds of players and debuted them in last year’s All-Star Game, receiving positive reviews. Fanatics took precise measurements of every player and Nike body-scanned over 300 players to ensure an ideal fit. This approach was described as “performance-driven” by MLB executive Stephen Roche.
Despite the criticism and concerns surrounding Nike’s new baseball jerseys, the league and Fanatics stand by their product, emphasizing the extensive testing and technological approach taken to outfit the players. As the 2024 MLB season progresses, it remains to be seen if any adjustments will be made to address the players’ and fans’ concerns.
