The Red Sox held their meeting with Juan Soto on Thursday, and it could have been more than just making an introduction to the coveted free agent.
MassLive’s Sean McAdam reported Friday that Boston’s meeting with Soto was “productive.” Chairman Sam Kennedy, Chairman Tom Werner, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow and Manager Alex Cora met with the 26-year-old in Los Angeles. The parties did not address financial matters as the nature of the meeting was “more broadly introductory and informative.”
The information obtained during the meeting could have allowed Soto to gauge Boston’s interest in him. However, this could have also included his agent Scott Boras.
“…He’s not the only free agent Scott Boras has this season,” insider Jon Morosi said on MLB Network. “Whether or not the conversation ends up being about Soto, it’s still about Scott Boras, the same agent for Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, a number of high-end players. Pete Alonso is one more. When you sit down with Juan Soto, let’s not forget that you’re also sitting down with someone who currently represents six or seven of the top 12 free agents in the industry. …”
The Red Sox need more high-quality arms for their pitching staff, and they could turn to Boras’ customers to help them solve that problem. Chris Holt was hired as bullpen coach this week, and he has experience working with Burnes from their short time with the Baltimore Orioles. Boston also needs a right-handed bat, and that ties into Alex Bregman, another Boras client.

It’s certainly possible that the Red Sox used the Soto meeting to not only introduce them to the All-Star outfielder, but also to see where they stand with other free agents. That’s not to say the Soto meeting had nothing. Boston could sign Soto and another high-end free agent to fit its needs, a three-hour meeting with Boras could help achieve those goals.
