The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees 2-4 away from home on Monday and are one game away from winning the 2024 World Series.
The California franchise extended its best-of-seven series lead to 3-0 and can clinch the title in Game 4 this Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.
The New York Yankees are now looking for an unprecedented feat, as no team in MLB history has come back from a three-game deficit to win the World Series.
The New York team did not undergo a sweep in the play-off since the Cincinnati Reds accomplished the feat in 1976. On the other hand, the most recent 4-0 World Series sweep was the San Francisco Giants over the Detroit Tigers in 2012.
Champions in 2020, the Dodgers are seeking their eighth World Series title, while the Yankees, last champions in 2009, seek their 28th MLB crown.
Freeman breaks the record
Freddie Freeman was the protagonist of game 3, hitting a home run for the third consecutive game in the series, tying the league’s all-time record.
The first baseman equaled the feats of Hank Bauer in 1958 and Barry Bonds in 2002, the only players to achieve a home run in the first three games of the World Series.
Ohtani limited is better than many others
Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani suffered a dislocated left shoulder in the second game win Saturday, but returned to the designated hitter role to start the third game. The Japanese batted 54 home run and stole 59 bases this season, an MLB record.
“He doesn’t feel in his best shape, but any percentage of Shohei is better than most people,” manager Dave Roberts said.
